Girls On The Run Spring 5K 2019
I recently had the honor of photographing the Greater Boston Girls on the Run 5K at Hormel stadium in Medford. This was an incredible event! As someone who didn’t take up running until after college, I was blown away by the strength, perseverance, and grit that these girls showed. Girls in grades 3 through 8 trained for 10 weeks with a running buddy to get to a point where they were ready to run a 5K. The 10 weeks culminated not only in this Spring 5K, but with a service project in their communities as well - what a gift!
With around 1600 attendees, I had no shortage of subjects that morning. Once the race had started, I tried my best to capture each one of the girls as they ran past water stop #2. I know from personal experience how rewarding it can be to see a race photo of yourself actually looking like a runner when maybe you just weren’t feeling it that race. Most of my personal race photos have got me in a solid speed walk, so I can appreciate the good action shot! Since I didn’t want to miss anyone - and since for many of these girls it was their first 5K - I ended up taking over 2000 photos in about three hours.
In all seriousness I had a smile on my face the entire morning and through all the edits because of these girls. If you’re a runner and/or interested in giving back to your community, I would definitely recommend checking out this amazing organization.
